Physical fitness can most aptly be defined as the bodys ability to complete daily activities without becoming too sore Essay Example For Students

Physical fitness can most aptly be defined as the bodys ability to complete daily activities without becoming too sore Essay Physical fitness can most aptly be defined as the bodys ability to complete daily activities without becoming too sore, without becoming too fatigued, and without getting out of breath. The concept of physical fitness involves three distinct factors, which are: cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and nutrition. It is imperative for one to allot an ample amount of time to each of these factors, as well as following a program specially suited to his or her needs. A major component of physical wellness is cardiovascular fitness. Cardiovascular fitness is the ability of the circulatory system to provide oxygen-rich blood for energy to the bodys organs. A persons pulse is the throbbing of arteries produced by the contractions of the heart. One may read his or her pulse at either the wrist or the neck. A persons resting heart rate is his or her heart rate at rest. To calculate this, one may simply count the beats of the heart per minute. A persons maximum heart rate is the maximum number of times his or her heart can beat in one minute. To calculate this, one may simply subtract his or her age from 220. The target heart rate is the number of times ones heart should beat per minute when exercising. This is between 60- and 90-percent of ones maximum heart rate. To increase cardiovascular fitness, one should develop a program that follows the principles of FIT training. For frequency, one should do an exercise between 3 and 5 times per week. For intensity, one should base how hard he or she exercises on the target heart rate. For time, one should start slowly, but gradually increase to approximately 45 to 60 minutes per day. Before engaging in this type of program, one should stretch and loosen up his or her muscles, and he or she should allow the muscles to cool down after an exercise, mostly by walking until he or she is near the resting heart rate. An example of a good cardiovascular fitness program that I would follow is: Day 1 at track: Warm-up 5 minutes Slow jog 20 minutes Walk 5 minutes Slow jog 20 minutes Cool-down 5 minutes Total time spent: 55 minutes Day 2 at pool: Warm-up 5 minutes Slow swim 15 minutes Rest 5 minutes Intense swim 15 minutes Cool-down 10 minutes Total time spent: 50 minutes Day 3 at track: Warm-up 5 minutes 2-lap warm-up jog 5 minutes Walk 5 minutes 2 mile run Start at 14 minutes, would seek to reduce time on each occasion Cool-down 10 minutes Total time spent: 40 minutes Another major component of physical wellness is muscular strength. Muscular strength is the ability of your body to lift a certain amount of weight at a given time. When working on muscular strength, one should know what sets and repetitions are. A set is a number of repetitions for which one performs a certain exercise. A repetition is the act of lifting and lowering a weight once. A maximum lift is the most amount of weight one can lift for one repetition. When beginning a weight training program, one should always start slowly, to get the body used to performing strenuous exercises. Moreover, a spotter should always be used when performing exercises. Lastly, before lifting, one should stretch the muscles he or she is about to work. An example of a strength training program that I would follow is: Upper Body Workout: Chest à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Bench Press 4 sets: 1 warm-up set of low weight, 3 sets of 6-8 reps at high weight Back à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Lat Pulldowns 4 sets: 1 warm-up set of low weight, 3 sets of 6-8 reps at high weight .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 , .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .postImageUrl , .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 , .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:hover , .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:visited , .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:active { border:0!important; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:active , .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90 .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2f618c37226bb03dcea9c776bdc44c90:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Parts of Speech Essay ThesisLower Body Workout: Quads à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Leg Extension 4 sets: 1 warm-up set of low weight, 3 sets of 6-8 reps at high weight Calves à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Calf Raise 4 sets: 1 warm-up set of low weight, 3 sets of 6-8 reps at high weight A final major component of physical wellness is nutrition. A simple way of eating properly is to follow the food pyramid. The six areas of the pyramid are: grains, vegetables, fruits, fats and oils, milk and dairy products, and meat/beans/fish/nuts. For someone following the routines mentioned above, he should have 10 ounces of grains, 3. 5 cups of vegetables, 2. cups of fruits, 3 cups of milk, 7 ounces of meats and beans, and 8 teaspoons of oils daily. Not eating properly could lead to several eating disorders. Obesity is an eating disorder where one becomes excessively fat. This disorder could lead to carious diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea. Another eating disorder is anorexia, which is excessive starvation. A final eating disorder is bulimia, which is when one engages in binge eating, followed by vomiting, abusing laxatives, or excessive exercising. All of these diseases more than often lead to death. To avoid nutritional diseases, one should have a balanced diet. A final part of nutrition is body fat. For young males, it is considered healthy to have between 10 and 25 percent body fat. For young females, it is considered health to have between 20 and 35 percent body fat. Physical wellness can be described as the ability to perform daily activities without soreness, fatigue, or loss of breath. To ensure of this, one should tailor a physical wellness program to his needs. This program should include the three areas of cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and nutrition.

The 9 Most Common Site Design Flaws That Hurt SEO

While a beautifully designed website may keep visitors on your website for longer, it’s not enough to attract visitors in the first place. The most effective business websites are built for both users and search engines. Check your website design for the following nine common mistakes to see if your design is helping or hindering your search engine rankings. 1. Missing H1 Tag on the Homepage The H1 tag is one of the first elements search engines check to determine what a web page is about. According to a 2015 Searchmetrics study, 80 percent of the top 10 pages in search engine results used an H1 tag. A missing H1 tag is therefore likely to decrease your chances of ranking higher. Solution: Explain the purpose of your website by using a descriptive, keyword-relevant H1 tag near the top of each page. 2. Large Images and Media Files According to a 2015 Adobe report, 39 percent of people will stop engaging with a website if images won’t load or take too long to load. This poor user experience is likely to result in lower rankings. Solution: Use Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool to test which of your site’s images Google thinks are too large. Resize or compress these images and re-upload them to your site. 3. Using Text in Images Search engines can’t read text within images, so these words have no impact on search rankings. Solution: To ensure search engines can â€Å"read† your content, use a text layer over an image, or use the alternative image meta tag to describe your image. One of Google’s top ranking factors is page speed. The Searchmetrics report found that the highest ranking pages loaded in an average of 1.16 seconds, so it’s obvious Google rewards pages that load quickly. Solution: Test your website’s average loading speed under â€Å"Performance† in Google Webmaster Tools, or use Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool for tips and recommendations. 5. Intrusive Popup Ads According to HubSpot, four out of five consumers have closed a browser or left a website because of a popup ad. Is your website guilty? If it is, you may be hit by Google’s recent Interstitial ad penalty. Solution: Keep your users and Google happy by removing annoying popup ads that get in the way of your content. Consider in-text hyperlinks as a calls to action instead. 6. Neglecting Global Navigation Familiar and straightforward navigation is essential for both visitors and search engines. Are you using clever or unusual navigation techniques for the sake of originality? It could harm your rankings. Solution: Use a navigation bar on each page that remains consistent so visitors and search engines never get lost. Use link titles that are familiar and easy to understand. 7. Abandoning Footer Links Footer links are still an important part of clear navigation, but some websites still don’t use them, which sends a signal to search engines that the website is harder to navigate. Solution: Insert footer links on every page, and include relevant anchor text for each page link, so that visitors and search engines can find their way around your site. Google penalizes sites with hard to find or missing contact information. Web users also want to find contact information easily. According to a KoMarketing study, 51 percent of people think â€Å"thorough contact information† is the most important element missing from many company websites. Solution: Clearly display contact information on every page of your site. Visitors that see your phone number and address will trust you more, and search engines will rank you higher for local search results. 9. Cluttered Design An Adobe study reported that 38 percent of people will stop engaging with a website if the layout is unattractive. The goal of good design is to provide guidance to users and search engines. When there are too many elements vying for attention, users will become confused and search engines are likely to penalize your site for usability issues. Solution: Eliminate nonessential elements on each web page. Use a consistent color scheme and layout, leave enough whitespace between elements, and cover only one topic per page. When SEO and Design Combine SEO should be treated as a part of the design process; the most effective websites balance aesthetics and functionality so that they’re nice to look at and easy to use. Avoid these nine web design mistakes and your website will achieve higher search engine rankings, your content will reach more customers, and your reputation will remain intact.

Two Nations-Book Review Essays - Social Inequality, Discrimination

Two Nations-Book Review Essays - Social Inequality, Discrimination Two Nations-Book Review Book Review-Two Nations by Andrew Hacker In Andrew Hackers book, Two Nations, Hacker argues that blacks and whites live in two different worlds. He uses statistical evidence to prove that the United States is a nation of inequality, hostility, and separatism. Hacker uses a quote from Benjamin Disraeli in the preface that basically sums up his entire book, Two nations, between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each others habits, thoughts, and feelings, as if they were dwellers in different zones, or inhabitants of different planets. This book reveals to all the real dimensions of race and how it controls lives and divides society. Hacker analyzes race in every aspect imaginable, such as politics, education, and crime. He shows how those in power use race as means of discrimination and domination. One issue Hacker addresses is Affirmative Action. I agree with his assertion that whites are afraid of it because they believe that it is enabling black America to be weak and subservient to the dictates of the society. However, Affirmative Action may be one of the few programs designed to help blacks. I also agreed with Hackers notion that society concentrates solely on black crime, but then looks away in instances of white crime. By white crime, Hacker means non-violent crimes like embezzlement and black crimes are the violent crimes like murder. Because society sees black crimes as more dangerous, they tend to ignore white crimes. As insightful as this book was, there was a great deal of things in it that I disagreed with. An issue brought up by Hacker that I disagree with is his perception that rape is a political act. Rape is an act of violence, whether white males commit it or black males or the victim is white or black. Rape is a horrible crime, politically motivated or not. I also disagree with Hackers belief that blacks have right to retribution because of the centuries they served as slaves. Please. Hacker was never a slave. Ive never owned a slave. What right does Hacker have in saying someone like him deserves retribution from someone like me? Hacker should realize that it is a new era, a new generation. Our generation shouldnt have to provide the black race with extra special treatment just because of what happened in the past. There was one section in this book that really touched a nerve. Hacker tends to think that his race is the only one that has suffered discrimination. He dismisses Hispanic and Asian discrimination as not so bad. He also says that terms like kike and spic do not have the same impact on a person as the term nigger. Being Jewish, I find it quite annoying that Hacker thinks he can answer for me by saying the term kike doesnt hurt my feelings as much as the term nigger hurts his. The Jews have been discriminated against more than anyone can possibly comprehend. From the inception of the Nazi party in 1933, Jews were deprived of all their civil right, persecuted, imprisoned and murdered. Eventually, they were herded into concentration camps in an attempt to eventually exterminate them all. During World War II, the Nazis had killed 6 million Jews out of a population of 8 million. Over the period of TWELVE YEARS 6 million Jews were murdered! Therefore, I believe that I have a stake to the cl aim of being a member of an ethnic group that has seen its share of discrimination. Hacker didnt bash the white race throughout he whole book. He also suggested that most blacks support double standards that they condemn whites for supporting. For example, Hacker said, most blacks find it acceptable to preserve black colleges, yet they object if a school designates itself as white. He also said that blacks would support a black political candidate just because he is black. However, if a white person votes for a white candidate, it is because they are racist. Finally, Hacker ends the book with the question, whom is responsible for all this? He says it is white America that made being a member of the black race so difficult. He may be right and he may be wrong by this.

Julius Caesars Civil War Battle of Pharsalus

Julius Caesars Civil War Battle of Pharsalus The Battle of Pharsalus took place on August 9, 48 BC and was the decisive engagement of Caesars Civil War (49-45 BC). Some sources indicate that battle may have taken place on June 6/7 or June 29. Overview With the war with Julius Caesar raging, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey) ordered the Roman Senate to flee to Greece while he raised an army in the region. With the immediate threat of Pompey removed, Caesar quickly consolidated his position in the western parts of the Republic. Defeating Pompeys forces in Spain, he shifted east and began preparing for a campaign in Greece. These efforts were hampered as Pompeys forces controlled the Republics navy. Finally forcing a crossing that winter, Caesar was soon joined by additional troops under Mark Antony. Despite being reinforced, Caesar was still outnumbered by Pompeys army, though his men were veterans and the enemy largely new recruits. Through the summer, the two armies maneuvered against each other, with Caesar attempting to besiege Pompey at Dyrrhachium. The resulting battle saw Pompey win a victory and Caesar was forced to back away. Wary of fighting Caesar, Pompey failed to follow up this triumph, preferring instead to starve his opponents army into submission. He was soon swayed from this course by his generals, various senators, and other influential Romans who wished him to give battle. Advancing through Thessaly, Pompey encamped his army on the slopes of Mount Dogantzes in the Enipeus Valley, approximately three and a half miles from Caesars army. For several days the armies formed for battle each morning, however, Caesar was unwilling to attack up the slopes of the mountain. By August 8, with his food supplies low, Caesar began debating withdrawing east. Under pressure to fight, Pompey planned to give battle the next morning. Moving down into the valley, Pompey anchored his right flank on the Enipeus River and deployed his men in the traditional formation of three lines, each ten men deep. Knowing that he had a larger and better-trained cavalry force, he concentrated his horse on the left. His plan called for the infantry to remain in place, forcing Caesars men to charge a long distance and tiring them before contact. As the infantry engaged, his cavalry would sweep Caesars from the field before pivoting and attacking into the enemys flank and rear. Seeing Pompey move off the mountain on August 9, Caesar deployed his smaller army to meet the threat. Anchoring his left, led by Mark Antony  along the river, he too formed three lines though they were not as deep as Pompeys. Also, he held his third line in reserve. Understanding Pompeys advantage in cavalry, Caesar pulled 3,000 men from his third line and arrayed them in a diagonal line behind his cavalry to protect the armys flank. Ordering the charge, Caesars men began advancing. Surging forward, it soon became clear that Pompeys army was standing their ground. Realizing Pompeys goal, Caesar halted his army approximately 150 yards from the enemy to rest and reform the lines. Resuming their advance, they slammed into Pompeys lines. On the flank, Titus Labienus led Pompeys cavalry forward and made progress against their counterparts. Falling back, Caesars cavalry led Labienus horsemen into the line of supporting infantry. Using their javelins to thrust at the enemy cavalry, Caesars men halted the attack. Uniting with their own cavalry, they charged and drove Labienus troops from the field. Wheeling left, this combined force of infantry and cavalry struck into Pompeys left flank. Though Caesars first two lines were under heavy pressure from Pompeys larger army, this attack, coupled with the entry of his reserve line, swung the battle. With their flank crumbling and fresh troops assaulting their front, Pompeys men began to give way. As his army collapsed, Pompey fled the field. Seeking to deliver the deciding blow of the war, Caesar pursued Pompeys retreating army and compelled four legions to surrender the following day. Aftermath The Battle of Pharsalus cost Caesar between 200 and 1,200 casualties while Pompey suffered between 6,000 and 15,000. Additionally, Caesar reported capturing 24,000, including Marcus Junius Brutus, and showed great clemency in pardoning many the Optimate leaders. His army destroyed, Pompey fled to Egypt seeking aid from King Ptolemy XIII. Shortly after arriving at Alexandria, he was murdered by the Egyptians. Pursuing his enemy to Egypt, Caesar was horrified when Ptolemy presented him with Pompeys severed head. Though Pompey had been defeated and killed, the war continued on as Optimate supporters, including the generals two sons, raised new forces in Africa and Spain. For the next few years, Caesar conducted various campaigns to eliminate this resistance. The war effectively ended in 45 BC after his victory at the Battle of Munda. Account for the increasing number of children incarcerated in the UK Essay

Account for the increasing number of children incarcerated in the UK. Is this an effective means to tackle youth offending - Essay Example uss different aspects of youth incarceration, especially in the context of Youth Justice System of the United Kingdom, and will endeavor to analyze available options of tackling youth offenders. It is a fact that every government has been giving significant importance to youth crime, in order to eliminate anti-social agents from the society from its roots; however, none has been able to achieve such objective due to a number of factors, such as unemployment, poverty, etc. On contrary, youth prison population has increased dramatically that has resulted in extreme criticism, as effects of youth imprisonment do not affect young offenders only, but families and communities as well. According to the UK government, (Home Office, 2008) tough penalties for young offenders cannot be avoided, as it is essential for a safe and healthy society; however, studies have observed that these tough and punitive penalties and custodies have resulted in contrary results, rather than allowing offenders to recover and break their offending cycle. Although steps are being taken to prevent young individuals from falling into this black hole; however, youth imprisonment presently seems to be the on ly option that is taken as effective, regardless its adversities. Policymakers believe that innocent public stays protected by custody and imprisonment sentences to young offenders; however, it is an agreeable fact that punishment confronted by young offenders in prisons results in isolation from society that is adverse for children according to a number of child psychologists. Studies have noted that children are unable to acquire proper guidance in custody and remand and end up with getting opinions from wrong people, such as serious criminals and offenders, which seems to be quite true with the fact that a majority of youth offenders are convicted after two years of going from the police custody. In the past, local services used to coordinate with magistrates, and after confirming presence
